Get to know "DeSiGn"

Last week, we were assigned to make a time lapse video, which shows in my previous post. And, for this week, we talked about the real meaning behind the word "DESIGN" .

Design plays big roles in various industries in this era. People need design for everything. Even when we talk about planning for a sustainable city, we think of designers who will help us create a great picture of how we can make our city look livable and what elements we should put in or eliminate to enhance our quality of living. Or, even for memorable experience, good designs can build variety of experiences to customers.

So, what exactly is DESIGN?

By definition, "Design" refers to [a plan showing looks and functions of objects].

And what is considered as a good DESIGN?

According to Bill Moggridge's article about design "Expressing Experiences in Design" in 1999, good design should take users' whole experience of interaction in concern. Design is not only about what we see but also about the whole experience such as what we feel, hear, taste and smell leading to aesthetic value. The successful design also should take the manufacturing requirements and challenges of market and distribution.

From the article, we also got to learn how IDEO, a design company, express experiences of through their designs of objects linking future concept to simple, daily usage such as Net Audio for Audible, StudyPro computer for NetSchools, Digital Camera for Kodak, Interactive Keyboard for Yamaha and Expressive Lamp.

What I found very interesting in this lecture is the company IDEO. I have never heard about this company before, but I found out that this company provides so many useful thinkings and ways of working in design aspects. Not all the products that IDEO created were successful, but they just learned little by little from their failure and developed their products to be accepted by the markets. This leaves me thinking I also should not stop myself from starting something up even from a small pace, but one day, it will become a big pace where success lies on.
